The course aims to develop a critical awareness of Politics and the relationship between political ideas, institutions and processes in modern Wales and beyond, the structures of authority and power within the political system of Wales and the United Kingdom and how these may differ from those of other political systems, especially that of the United States.

…you like to stay on top of Politics

…you want to learn about how political systems work

…you’d like a career in Politics or Government, Law, Legal Services or a career in journalism or the media

…you are interested in following the Humanities Pathway, Law Pathway or Social Sciences Pathway

The AS Level is composed of two modules, which focus on Government and Politics of modern Wales and its context within the UK.

  • Unit 1: Government in Wales and the UK
  • Unit 2: Living and participating in a democracy

The A Level is made up of the AS units plus two more units, which are studied at a higher level.

  • Unit 3: Political concepts and themes
  • Unit 4: Government and politics of the USA

You’ll be assessed via externally set examinations. Students are expected to complete internally set formal assessments throughout the year. Upon completion, you’ll achieve:

  • AS Level Government and Politics
  • A Level Government and Politics

You will have the opportunity to take part in political debates and participate in interviews with local and national media on current issues.

To enrol, you’ll need a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above, including C grade minimum in English/Welsh First Language and Maths/Maths Numeracy.

It’s important that you have a lively and enquiring mind, as well as an interest in politics and current affairs.

Students with AS or A Level Government and Politics have access to a wide range of possible career and higher education opportunities in such areas as Business, Economics, Law, Media, Journalism Philosophy and, of course, Politics.
