TV’s Alan Titchmarsh delivers garden makeover with the help of our landbased learners

A group of our countryside management learners were among the volunteers who helped television gardener Alan Titchmarsh as he transformed a garden for the ITV programme Love Your Garden.

Father of three Alan Garlick, who lost his hands and feet to sepsis just 22 months ago, was moved to tears by the fabulous garden created for him and his young family.

Assistant producer Katharine Ross said, “There was a heart-warming response from the local community coming to help create a garden evocative of the surrounding countryside with all the stylish features a young family would expect.”

The plot in Pontypool was the largest back garden that Alan had ever taken on, with the challenge of steep uneven levels and overgrown trees, shrubs and bushes. Before Chris’s sepsis attack he’d planned to tackle the garden renovation himself but it then became an unattainable dream until Alan and the team stepped in to create a safe, accessible family garden.

The transformed garden includes a contemporary style water-feature cum bench created from treated sleepers and Corten steel plus naturalistic planting with the emphasis on scent to create the perfect garden for wellness.

Helen Morgan, Head of School, Landbased and Sport said, “Our Countryside Management learners were delighted to help with this garden transformation for the Love Your Garden show – it was great practical experience for them.  The learners selflessly gave up their time in order to help and they were fantastic ambassadors for the College.  It truly was an emotional experience.”

The programme which aired on October 22.
