FAQs for full time students

We have regular open events throughout the year, designed to give you all the information you need to make sure you choose the right course and find out what financial support is available. You’ll find details of our open events here. In fact, why not register now and save time on the day?

For any of our full time courses you can apply right away.  Applications are dealt with on a first come, first served basis so getting yours in as early as you can gives you a better chance of being offered a place.

If you know what you want to do, you can browse courses by subject or use our course search tool on the right hand side and click on the name for more details.  If you’d like some inspiration, our latest videos will help you explore your career options and show you what current students are doing.

Once you’ve decided on your course, just click ‘apply’ at the bottom of the course page. If this is the first time you’ve submitted an online application, you’ll be asked to create an account by choosing a username and password.

We only take one application at a time but if you decide the course you chose isn’t for you during the process, we can change your application.

Firstly, you’ll be given a conditional offer of a place and invited to come and see us.  It’s a sort of informal ‘interview’, where we’ll give you more information on your course and you’ll have the chance to ask any questions to make sure you’re on the right course. For certain courses you may be asked to complete an assessment or take part in an audition.  If so, we’ll give you more details when we offer you a place.

If you’ve not heard anything within a week of applying, call Admissions on 01495 333777. They’ll be able to let you know the status of your application’s and what happens next.

You’ll have the chance to ask questions about the course you’ve chosen when you come for your informal interview. Think about what you’d like to ask, using the pre-interview questionnaire we send to help you. If you change your mind about your course while you’re chatting to us, we can arrange for your application to be changed.

You’ll need to have an interview – it’s a condition of being offered a place.  If you can’t make your appointment, just call our Admissions team on 01495 333777 and we’ll rearrange it.

No, you need to accept your offer and meet the conditions to reserve your place.  You’ll also need to enrol before the start of term, and we’ll let you know in July when you need to enrol, which will be some time in August.

There are no tuition fees for any of our full time further education courses, but if you’re a full time learner, you’ll have to pay a £10 administration fee when you enrol.  There might be other costs to pay, such as membership fees, studio fees, salon fees and exam fees.  We’ll let you know about these when you come for your interview. You can find out more about getting help with costs and financial support then, or you can simply contact Admissions on 01495 333777 for more information.

For some courses you’ll need essential kit or equipment, such as safety equipment, hairdressing and beauty kits, uniform or books.  We’ll let you know about anything you need during your interview, but if you’re unsure, our Admissions team will be happy to help on 01495 333777.

Course times vary, but you should expect to be in college from Monday to Friday for anything between 9am-5pm.  You’ll find out the exact days and times for your course when you get your timetable at induction.

If you’ve already applied and had your interview and offer, we’ll send you a letter inviting you to an enrolment session.   If you haven’t applied yet, it’s not too late to join us in September.  Apply online now or call our Admissions team on 01495 333777 and they’ll let you know what you need to do.

Your invitation to enrol will include details of what you need to bring.  Typically you’ll need:

  • One form of personal identification, e.g. passport, national insurance card
  • Your National insurance number
  • A travel letter from your local authority (if applicable) and the admin fee for your bus pass (16-18 year olds £10.00, 19 years plus £40.00)
  • Your learner administration fee (£10.00) payable by all full time learners
  • Your exam result slip or proof of qualifications to show you meet your course conditions
  • Any course or PPE fees, if needed

After your enrolment in August, you’ll be told more about your first classes and timetable for September, which will be available on the student app CG Connect.

Download the app now.

If you haven’t already enrolled, call our Admissions team on 01495 333777.  They’ll arrange another interview session to help you decide on a course that’s right for you. If you’ve already enrolled and started college, make sure you talk to us as soon as you start to have any doubts.  If it’s within the first six weeks of starting, contact Learner Services and we’ll do our best to transfer you to a more suitable course. If it’s after the first six weeks, you can get support and advice at any time by talking to your Personal Tutor, Head of Learner Services or Learner Services on your campus.

Financial support and transport

There are lots of grants and financial support funds available, many of which depend on your household income and personal circumstances.  For more details, just call into your nearest campus or contact the Admissions team on 01495 333777.

If you’re aged 16 to 18 and live outside of Monmouthshire, you can apply to your local authority (LEA) for a bus pass.  If you live in Monmouthshire, you can apply direct to the college at enrolment and pay £10.00 per term, plus £1.50 per single journey.  If you’re over 18, you can apply for a Coleg Gwent concessionary bus pass at enrolment and pay £40.00 per term plus £1.50 per single journey.

You might also qualify for our Leaner Support Fund (LSF), which could help with the cost of your bus pass.  Contact Learner Services at your campus for an application form.  If you’re aged 16 to 18, you’ll still need to also apply to your local authority.
