Whether you want to get into uni, land your dream job, or simply feel more confident in everyday life, strong maths and English skills can take you far.

If you didn’t get a Grade C (or above) in GCSE Maths or English, don’t worry. At Coleg Gwent, we’ll help you improve your skills and gain the qualifications you need, alongside your main course.

What you’ll study 

Depending on your previous results, you’ll be placed on the right level for you. This could include: 

  • Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales 
  • Advanced Learning Level 3 
  • GCSE English Language or Mathematics (resits) 
  • Essential Skills Wales: Application of Number and/or Communication  

What we look at 

We’ll look at your GCSE results and initial assessments to find the best route for you. 

Here’s a quick guide: 

Grade C or above? You’ll study Advanced Skills or Advanced Learning 

Grade D? You’ll resit your GCSEs or study Essential Skills 

Grade E or below? You’ll build your skills through Essential Skills at Level 1 or Entry Level 

English as a second language? You’ll complete an assessment to find the right level for you 

Home-schooled or 19+? You will need to sit an entry assessment before starting a GCSE course

You may find Maths and English challenging, or they may not be your favourite subjects, but they’re still so important for your future, so stick at it! Ask for help and stay focused because these subjects will open doors for your future study and career.

You may have to study really hard to achieve those all-important C Grades in Maths and English, but it’ll certainly be worth the effort.  Once you have these qualifications, you’ll have more opportunities in the future.
