18 March 2021

Name: Jack Bright
Home: Trevethin
Course: BTEC Career Colleges Digital Technologies Level 3
Campus: Crosskeys Campus

Jack studied our BTEC Career Colleges Digital Technologies Level 3 course at Crosskeys Campus in 2018, before going on to study his Bachelor’s Degree at Cardiff Metropolitan University. He chose this course because of its well-rounded coverage in the area of computing, and it set him up to achieve an unconditional offer at university. Read on to hear Jack’s story…

Why did you choose this course?

“I chose Coleg Gwent because the Career Colleges Digital Technologies course covered so much more than A level computing courses. Instead of focusing on just one aspect such as Computer Science, you learn not only that but multiple other skills that can help you decide on your future career. For me, it was Cyber Security.”

What was the best thing about studying at Coleg Gwent?

“Through Coleg Gwent, I met some of my closest friends and had amazing support from the staff. They helped calm me down and reassure me whenever I needed it. I also liked the more practical modules such as Digital Design and Game Development, but also very much enjoyed the theory-based lessons in security-based modules.”

What was your biggest achievement at Coleg Gwent?

“While at Coleg Gwent, I was asked to participate in a Networking Competition during the Skills Wales Competitions. I had never done this type of Networking before, but through some revision of the basis of the skills required, I managed to come 3rd overall in the competition! Another Achievement for me was my redemption in my second year, as I managed to go from a Pass in my first year to 3 merits overall.”

What are you doing now and what are your long-term goals?

“I am now studying my Bachelor’s Degree at Cardiff Metropolitan University – I was offered an unconditional place and I can thank Coleg Gwent for that. I got so much experience while studying there and even got to work for Admiral Insurance though the college.

Not only this but I gained so much confidence through Coleg Gwent and the Career Colleges Trust. I was shy when I started at college, but through Careers College Trust I managed to learn many business skills such as time management, group working, confidence and business speech. Thanks to the Career Colleges scheme, I built my confidence up enough to publicly speak at Amazon Web Services (AWS) Headquarters in London.”

What advice would you give to students considering studying at Coleg Gwent?

“My advice to anybody contemplating studying at Coleg Gwent is to do it. I was hesitant about college at first, but thanks to college I’ve achieved so much at the age of 19 and I’m on route to achieving so much more. I wouldn’t be in this position if it weren’t for Coleg Gwent.”
