Building a better future with industry-standard surveying equipment

28 October 2021

At Coleg Gwent, our courses give you more than just a qualification – they’re designed to prepare you for building a better future in your chosen career. As we train the workforce of the future, we want our learners to experience the latest developments in their industry to set them up for success. The construction sector is one industry that’s always advancing, whether that’s through the development of new materials or improvements in machinery. So, investing in state-of-the-art equipment is an important part of helping our learners keep up with the latest changes and innovations in the sector.

With new developments and advancements in mind, our Construction and Civil Engineering department at the City of Newport Campus has had an exciting delivery of brand-new surveying equipment from KOREC. As specialists in providing high-quality measurement solutions, surveying equipment, and mapping systems for the engineering and construction sectors in the UK, KOREC brings innovative technology to the market, making it possible for us to offer industry-standard equipment for learners to use on campus. This is exactly the type of equipment we want you to experience during your studies at Coleg Gwent, preparing you for the world of work and the future of the industry. It’s vital to be exposed to these pieces of high-tech equipment early in your career, so you can become familiar with the specialist tools you’ll see in the workplace. It all helps to get you ready for the move into employment after college.

So, we’ve purchased an educational package from KOREC, including a Trimble robotic total station, a manual total station, a GNSS Network Rover, and the educational licensed software required for them. Construction Tutor, Paul Hayes, worked alongside Head of School, Nigel Ridout, and a Trimble Accredited Trainer from KOREC, to secure the new equipment that will serve our students at the leading edge of construction technology into the next decade. A Certified Trimble Trainer has offered to train our staff to upskill their current experience too, allowing us to provide the best opportunity for our students to learn with experienced tutors and industry-standard equipment.

These fantastic new tools allow us to stay industry-current at Coleg Gwent, providing you with the best learning opportunities, right on your doorstep. The equipment will be used for topographical surveying, land surveying, angular measurement, and setting out of buildings, which are integral elements to our technical education modules in Construction and the Built Environment courses. It will allow learners to collect very accurate data that can improve their analytical work prior to the design stage ani It’ll be used for teaching at all levels of Surveying and Site Engineering, right up to HNC and HND level. This means that both full time students and apprentices will benefit from training with this equipment, and develop an understanding of the principles behind their use.

With the new facilities available at Coleg Gwent, we’re also running an exciting project module for our Level 3 learners that will include a full topographical survey of a field in Crickhowell. This is a great opportunity for our learners to use the new equipment and apply theory to practice in a real-world scenario. The final result of the project will be a residential design project that could potentially provide insight for a client to have a parcel of land added to the Brecon Beacons National Park Local Plan.

So, if you’re considering a career in construction, make it possible with a course at Coleg Gwent. You’ll benefit from expert tutors sharing their skills and knowledge, alongside industry-standard equipment and fantastic opportunities to build your experience. Discover more about our Construction courses and apply today!
