In a nutshell
IEMA Internal Environmental Management Systems (EMS) Auditor equips professionals with the knowledge and practical skills to conduct internal audits of Environmental Management Systems (EMS) in line with ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 19011 auditing principles. You’ll gain a solid understanding of EMS standards, environmental legislation, audit planning, and auditing techniques. The course includes hands-on exercises, case studies, and a final assessment to build confidence in conducting effective internal audits.
This course is available as part of a Personal Learning Account (PLA). PLA is an initiative from the Welsh Government which offers people the chance to access free, part-time courses with flexible and convenient learning that fits around their existing lifestyle (subject to eligibility).

… anyone aged 19+, living in Wales and in employment. The usual salary limit of £34,303 does not apply to this course.
...individuals responsible for maintaining or auditing their organisation’s EMS—especially those preparing for external certification or aiming to improve environmental performance.

Course content
This course is delivered by virtual classroom. Virtual classrooms are equivalent to face-to-face classroom courses, but delivered in an online environment.
Course Duration:15 Days
Throughout the course you will cover the following:
- Understand the fundamentals and purpose of Environmental Management Systems (EMS)
- Explore ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 19011 auditing principles
- Identify environmental aspects, impacts, and compliance obligations
- Plan and prepare for internal EMS audits
- Conduct audits using effective techniques (e.g. checklists, interviews, site inspections)
- Evaluate audit findings and report non-conformities
- Understand corrective actions and follow-up processes
- Apply environmental legislation and maintain a legal register
- Participate in practical audit exercises and case studies

No formal entry requirements.
You will need access to internet, a windows computer and webcam/microphone.

The PLA programme intends to provide quality career advice and guidance to participants before, during and after their learning.
Prior to being enrolled onto your PLA funded course, an individual learning plan will be discussed with you to ensure that the right learning has been considered.
This will include a general discussion on the following topics:

- prior experience within the industry or field
- career aspirations
- dedication of time required
