In a nutshell

The Vehicle Mounted Hydraulic Lorry Loader (often called a lorry loader, vehicle mounted hydraulic loader or by the manufacturer name “HIAB“) operator course will give you the skills to operate the crane safely and efficiently.

Upon successful completion you will be awarded with an RTITB accredited licence, valid for 3 years.

This course is available as part of a Personal Learning Account (PLA). PLA is an initiative from the Welsh Government which offers people the chance to access free, part-time courses with flexible and convenient learning that fits around their existing lifestyle (subject to eligibility).

This course is for...

Individuals currently employed by Tata Steel UK (sites in Wales) OR its wider Welsh supply chain (including at risk of redundancy), aged 19+, living in Wales.

Course content

The course is completed over 2 full days, with a maximum of 3 trainees.

Throughout the course you will learn how to carry out a pre-use inspection, operate attachments, manoeuvre a variety of loads using the machine, and understand signals given by the slingers and signallers. You will also be able to recall and explain the causes of instability of the truck and loads.

You will be required to pass a theory test, followed by a practical assessment.

Entry Requirements

You must already hold a large goods licence (category C1, C or CE) in order to enrol on this course.
