Before starting this qualification, it is recommended that learners:
Have experience of participating in Pilates Matwork sessions Learners must hold a Personal Training qualification and may need to complete addiotional units depending on when the qualification was achieved and units covered.
In a nutshell
The purpose of this qualification is to enable learners to plan, deliver and evaluate Pilates matwork sessions and programmes. This may include:
Group Pilates matwork sessions. One-to-one Pilates matwork sessions and programmes. Pilates matwork sessions using small equipment to modify exercises, such as bands, balls and bricks.

The course includes:
Anatomy and Physiology

Providing a positive customer experience to support a Pilates business OR Providing a positive customer experience to exercise and fitness participants
Health awareness and lifestyle management
Health awareness and lifestyle management for Pilates professionals OR Health awareness and lifestyle management
Pilates Matwork
Health screening, risk stratification and working within scope of practice The history, origins, and fundamentals of the Pilates method Plan, deliver and evaluate Pilates matwork sessions and programmes
To achieve the YMCA Level 3 Diploma in Instructing Pilates Matwork (610/4340/0), learners must achieve six mandatory units across 4 groups.
Assessments include:
- Questions and answers on Anatomy and physiology for Pilates and yoga professionals
- Presentation and professional discussion
- Personal practice
- Exercise analysis worksheet and professional discussion
- Plan, deliver and evaluate a group Pilates-based matwork session (observed delivery) with professional discussion
- Bespoke client work project with professional discussion

What comes next?
The YMCA Level 3 Diploma in Instructing Pilates Matwork (610/4340/0) is an occupational entry qualification. This means it meets the agreed industry prerequisites to enter the sport and physical activity sector as an employed or self-employed Pilates Matwork instructor.
This qualification can also lead to further training at the same and/or higher level to specialise and further increase scope of practice. For example:
