Coleg Gwent ranked in top 10 FE Colleges in WorldSkills UK National Finals

Coleg Gwent ranked in top 10 FE Colleges in WorldSkills UK National Finals

Coleg Gwent was ranked within the top 10 performing colleges, coming 9th across the whole of the UK and 2nd among the Welsh FE colleges taking part at the prestigious Skills Show UK Final after winning 4 medals last week.

A record number of spectators, nearly 80,000, thronged the three-day interactive event organised by WorldSkills UK and held at the NEC in Birmingham.

Almost 500 students and apprentices, exponents of 55 disciplines - as diverse as Aircraft Maintenance to 3D Game Design, Cabinet Making, Plumbing to Beauty Therapy and Cyber Security - took part in the National Finals.

Thomas Seward, aged 19 from Brynmawr, who studies at the college’s Blaenau Gwent Learning Zone and is an apprentice with P.I. Lewis, won a silver medal in the Electrical Installation competition.

“I’m really pleased to have won a medal and would definitely recommend entering this competition as it improves your skills and you learn a lot from the process. It also makes a lot of difference to your CV,” said Thomas.

He has also been selected into Squad UK to train further with a chance of representing the UK in Kazan, Russia in 2019.

Crosskeys Campus students, 22-year-old Rachel Watson from Abercarn who studies Beauty Therapy won a bronze medal in the Beauty Therapy: Hands and Face competition while Karen Coates aged 19 from Bridgend also won a bronze medal in the Media Make-up: Body competition.

Rachel said: “There are lots of benefits of taking part, for example I’ve built a lot more confidence from doing this competition and it helps you to build a name in the industry.”

Ricky Raybould aged 20 from Newport who is studying Sport, Sports Massage and Sports Referral at the college’s Usk Campus was highly commended in the Fitness Training: Personal Trainer competition.

Ricky had two days of competition to test the skills and knowledge required to deliver excellent fitness instruction to clients. One day involved seven hours in the gym, providing three or four consultations for clients and then writing them each a 12 week programme.

“My tutors have been a massive influence and very, very supportive. The competition is good because it makes you push yourself out of your comfort zone,” explained Ricky.

Also competing at the NEC in the UK National Finals was Rachel Watson’s twin sister Rebecca who studies Beauty Therapy, 21-year-old Megan Sampson from Cwmbran who is studying for a foundation degree in Forensic Science, 19-year-old Jessica Leonard from Pontypool who is studying Sport, Sport Massage and Sports Referral and Luke Williams aged 17 from Abercarn who is studying Professional Cookery and took part in the Advanced Restaurant Service competition.

Coleg Gwent Principal Guy Lacey said: “We are extremely proud of all of the students who worked so hard competing in the various stages of the WorldSkills competition.  Congratulations to our winners who are truly among the UK’s most talented young people.”

Dr Neil Bentley, CEO WorldSkills UK, added: “This has been a wonderful showcase for UK skills. The competition was fierce and the standards very high – all the finalists have done brilliantly well just to get this far. All their hard work and dedication has been rewarded and we at WorldSkills UK salute you.”
