Construction
There are many career opportunities in the construction trades and the demand for qualified and experienced workers has not been greatly affected by recent economic conditions. Many craftspeople are multi-skilled, and those skills have always been in demand. Craftspeople are generally people who can plan effectively, have creative skills and who can use basic maths like volumes, measurements and costings. They can use IT in business and communications and have the work skills that mean they can contribute to an organisation in meeting its customers’ needs.
Traditionally a craftsperson has been ‘time-served’; they have qualified to Level 3 or beyond and completed an Apprenticeship working in their chosen trade, gaining experience on the tools whilst studying at College. Competition for Apprenticeship placements has always been hard and for many people the available option for entering the industry has been to study full time at College and progress into work. The opportunity at College can be in a single trade or in a range of related trades.
Typically, introductory courses at Entry Level and Level 1 offer that full time route and allow progression into Level 2 and Level 3 studies which may be completed full time or on part time ‘day-release’ courses, (typically taking one day and/or evenings) to gain the recognised additional qualifications and experience.
Coleg Gwent also offers a range of part time courses for those wanting to specialise in a particular area alongside their job, including plumbing, painting & decorating, gas installation, brickwork, plastering and a range of one-day workshops for those who want to improve their DIY skills.
