Our course is designed for people with a career interest in barbering and is ideal if you have little or no experience or skills in barbering. We will help you to develop your customer service skills when dealing with clients and employability skills for all types of jobs.

You’ll learn about:

  • Client consultations

  • Reception skills

  • Shampooing

  • Blow drying

  • Basic hair and beard cutting

There is an expectation that you attend work placement during the academic year either weekly or on block. This can either be organised by you or your tutors will support you to find a suitable placement.

The course is delivered through:

  • Theory classes

  • Practical workshops

  • Real salon environments at the college

  • Commercial sessions

  • Demonstrations

  • Group work

  • Work placement

  • Enrichment activities such as trip, visits, guest speakers and outside demonstrations.

You’ll be assessed via practical assessments, assignments, projects and multiple-choice online tests covering underpinning knowledge. Once complete, you’ll achieve:

  • VRQ Level 2 Barbering

  • Appropriate supporting qualifications to broaden your skill set and meet the needs of industry

  • Skills Activities

  • Maths and English

  • Creative Enrichment Skills (community activities and demonstrations)

You will need to be self-motivated, hardworking, friendly and have a high level of personal presentation.

There will be an expectation that you attend work placement during the academic year. All delivery takes place on campus and there will be one evening a week when you may be in college until late.

Attendance and punctuality for all sessions is a major requirement of this course.

NVQ Level 2 in Barbering or employment at a junior apprentice level.

A minimum of 3 GCSEs grade D or above to include: Maths/Numeracy and English/Welsh 1st Language or an appropriate Entry Level qualification. Applicants without the minimum GCSEs will be considered based on previous experience or other qualifications.

Dress code:

  • Tunic with black trousers and black shoes must be worn in salons

  • Any hair must be neatly tied back off the face

  • Any nail extensions & varnish must not be worn

  • No piercings: only a wedding ring is allowed to be worn in the salon

As a condition of your place on this course, you will be expected to purchase the appropriate kit, from our approved supplier, costing approximately £200.

To reflect industry expectations, you will be required to wear a Coleg Gwent salon tunic which is to be ordered from our approved supplier. Details on how to order your tunic and kit, with supplier payment options, can be obtained from your Head of School, Lecturer or Technician. The tunic price for 2024/2025 is £45.
