Course Overview
This course is the perfect progression after completing your BHS Stage 1. You’ll cover all practical and theory-based aspects required to prepare for the British Horse Society (BHS) Stage 2 qualification.

During this part-time course, you’ll develop a variety of practical skills including:
- Riding school movements at walk, trot and canter
- Riding without stirrups
- Working in a light seat
- Pole work
- Riding over a course of fences.
As the course progresses, you’ll develop further skills on the flat and over fences.
You’ll also develop a broad knowledge of horse care, including:
- Handling skills
- Horse health
- Feeding
- Basic stable management
- First aid for horses
- Work programmes and fittening
- Presenting horses
- Fitting tack
- Travelling horses safely
To further expand your knowledge you could progress on to the BHS Stage 3 & 4 (Care & Lunge) Training course.
While there are no formal entry requirements for this course, you should have adequate riding skills, including the ability to walk, trot and canter independently. Applicants must be able to ride outside in an open space, jump single fences and a small course of 75cm.
Learners should be at least 19 years of age and will be expected to attend a riding assessment before commencing the course.
Note – To ensure the welfare of our horses, our equestrian centre operates a riding weight limit of 14 stone. All applicants can study a ride or non-ride option on all of our equine courses and therefore will not be denied a place.
This course is run by one of our BHS qualified instructors and runs on an evening.
You’ll require a correctly fitted riding hat and body protector that both meet current safety standards, riding boots, jodhpurs, gloves and a riding crop.
Please note that this course is designed to prepare learners for the BHS Stage 2 qualification, however this course does not include the assessment.
