Course Overview

The Welsh Government’s ambition is to develop a skilled health and social care workforce, which is highly regarded as a profession and a career of choice, and recognised for the vital role the Health and Social Care sector plays in supporting individuals throughout their life.

…you want a blend of practical and theory learning

This course is ideal for learners wanting to work in the health or social care industry, who want to undertake a regular work placement alongside a comprehensive vocational course.

The qualification covers the fundamental knowledge and understanding of the All Wales Induction Framework (AWIF) for Health and Social Care, and reflects a range of different roles and settings.

The content covers:

  • the principles and values of health and social care (adults)
  • health and well-being
  • professional practice as a health and social care worker
  • safeguarding individuals
  • health and safety in health and social care. As well as a further four units that cover the Principles and Contexts of Health and Social Care.

You will learn through group work, classroom-based learning and a work experience, which is a compulsory part of the programme.

You will be assessed through a multiple choice exam linked to the core qualification. You will also be assessed on work placement performance and successful completion of an end of year exam linked to Principles & Context.

Completion of the programme will give you:-

  • Level 2 Health and Social Care – (Adult Core)
  • Level 2 Principles and Context.

Appropriate supporting qualifications to broaden your skill set and meet the needs of industry such as;

  • Food Hygiene
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Maths and English

Full commitment to attendance is required, as is respect for others, enthusiasm for the subject, self-motivation and a passion for the health and social care industry. You’ll be continually assessed and there is an expectation that you will continue your studies whilst undertaking work placement.

Opportunity to progress onto Level 3 Principles and Context or Level 2 City & Guilds Practice (Work Based Learning – Adults).

To enter the course, you’ll need a minimum of 4 GCSEs, Grade D or above, to include either Maths/Numeracy or English/Welsh First Language, or an appropriate Level 1 Diploma qualification in the relevant vocational area, to include either GCSE Maths/Maths Numeracy or English/Welsh First Language.

Progressing Level 1 learners to achieve MM grade and to have demonstrated progression and engagement in Skills.

All learners will have to have a satisfactory Enhance DBS check prior to starting this course (at their own cost).

DBS applications must be carried out at Coleg Gwent.
