Course Overview
This course will develop your skills in caring for children. You will study units on childcare practice, growth and development, health and safety, play and creative activities, linking to current legislations.

Throughout this course, you’ll build the knowledge and skills needed for working with children and young people from birth to 19 years of age. It covers a diverse range of job roles and occupational areas, preparing you for work in childcare settings.
The course is a combination of theory and practice. You will spend three days per week in college developing the knowledge and theoretical elements of the qualification, and two days per week in a work placement (plus block placements where required) gaining practical experience in a professional setting.
The course will develop subject knowledge and you will be assessed through a mulitple-choice question paper for the Core. The competencies for the Theory and Practice will be assessed through an exam and a portfolio of evidence. A large part of this assessment takes place in your placement setting and through an end of year exam.
Upon completion of the course, you will gain the following qualifications:
- Level 2 Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development
- Level 2 Core (City & Guilds)
- Level 2 Theory and Practice (WJEC)
- Maths and English (GCSE or ESW)
You’ll also achieve other relevant qualifications to enhance your skill set such as:
- Food hygiene
- Paediatric First Aid
You will be expected to commit to 5 days of study each week, which includes both the teaching sessions covering the knowledge element of the qualification in college, as well as work placement days/blocks covering the competency element of the qualification.
Full commitment to attendance and professional behaviour is required.
You will be continually assessed throughout the course and there is an expectation that you will complete independent study.
Following completion of this course, you’ll be able to progress onto Level 3 Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development WJEC/City & Guilds.
You will also be ready to enter the world of work and gain employment in roles such as pre-school assistant, nursery assistant, creche assistant, out of school childcare worker or Cylch Meithrin assistant.
To enrol on this course, you’ll need:
- a minimum of 4 GCSEs, Grade D or above, to include either Maths/Numeracy or English/Welsh First Language;
- or an appropriate Level 1 Diploma qualification in the relevant vocational area completed at MM and need to have shown commitment to studies in your main programme and to demonstrate progress within Maths and English.
All learners must have a satisfactory, Enhanced DBS check prior to starting the course (at their own cost). DBS Application must be carried out in Coleg Gwent.
