Course Overview

This course provides a fast track route into higher education in science and forensic science if you don’t have any formal qualifications.

The course provides a supportive and friendly environment to enable you to develop your potential and to prepare you for university level study, with many past Access students going on to gain degrees and other awards. You will study:

  • Academic units in biology, forensic science, chemistry and physics
  • An extended project which can be linked to any of the science disciplines studied
  • Communication skills and mathematics

This course is ideal if you’re looking to progress onto a degree in the following science related disciplines:

  • Marine biology
  • Food and science technology
  • Public health nutrition
  • Forensic biology
  • Biology with biotechnology

or if you’d like to work in a science-based career such as health care services, education, government and research.

There are no formal examinations but you will be continually assessed through assignments, oral presentations and practical tasks and on completion, you’ll achieve the Agored Cymru Access to Forensic Science/Bioscience Level 3 Diploma.

This is a preparatory course for university and requires a high level of commitment. We review every application carefully on an individual basis and therefore require applicants to attend an interview session. For entry, you will need to demonstrate good interpersonal skills, commitment to the area of study and enthusiasm and understanding of your chosen career route. You will also need a GCSE Grade A* – C (or equivalent skills) in English Language or mathematics.

Learners need to have been out of full time education for at least three years prior to studying this course. As the course is designed for those with life experience, it is not usually suitable for applicants aged under 19 years.

Full commitment to attendance is required. Respect for others, enthusiasm for the subject and self-motivation are the essential qualities we expect to see in all our learners. You will be continually assessed and there is an expectation that you will continue your studies and coursework outside of college. All assignments must be successfully completed in order to achieve the qualification.

Degree courses in a range of science-related areas or employment. You may also apply for the Foundation Degree in Forensic Science. The qualification is designed for learners wishing to make their careers in local government, national health trusts, Ministry of Defence, police forces, schools, further education colleges and universities, analytical and forensic laboratories, environmental and conservation agencies, telecom agencies or oil and gas companies.
