Course Overview

This course provides a fast track route into higher education in humanities or social science subjects if you don’t have formal qualifications.

You will usually have some life experience beyond compulsory education, normally having been out of compulsory education for two years or more. The objective of the course is to provide a supportive and friendly environment to help you develop your potential and to prepare you for university level study, with many past students going on to gain degrees and other awards.

You will study a selection of subjects such as sociology, psychology, history and English literature. You will also study key skills units in communication, numeracy and ICT.

This course is ideal if you wish to progress on to higher education in humanities or social science subjects such as law, sociology, psychology, history, English literature, philosophy, social work etc. Degree level qualifications in these areas can lead to employment in areas such as teaching, social work, psychotherapy, youth work, local government, human resources, the police force, legal professions such as solicitor or barrister, journalism, and social research.

No formal academic qualifications are required. However, the course demands a high level of dedication and prospective students are assessed prior to being offered a place. A level of maths (at least Level 1) and English (at least Level 2) is required for this course.?GCSE grade C in English desirable.

Full commitment to attendance is required. Respect for others, enthusiasm for the subject and self-motivation are the essential qualities we expect to see in all our learners. You will be continually assessed and there is an expectation that you will continue your studies and coursework. All assignments must be successfully completed in order to achieve the qualification.

Higher education in areas such as English, history, law, sociology, psychology and teacher training, or employment.

This is a preparatory course for university and requires a high level of commitment. We review every application carefully on an individual basis and therefore require applicants to attend an interview session. For entry, you will need to demonstrate good interpersonal skills, commitment to the area of study and enthusiasm and understanding of your chosen career route. You will also need a GCSE Grade A* – C (or equivalent skills) in English Language or Mathematics.

All prospective students are assessed prior to being offered a place. A level of maths (at least Level 1) and English (at least Level 2) is required for this course.?

The course is designed for those with life experience, it is not usually suitable for applicants aged under 19 years.

 

 

There is an entrance assessment which all applicants will need to pass as part of the entry requirements.
