Course Overview

Classroom support in schools is vital in helping children reach their full potential – and if working in a support role appeals to you, this course will give you the knowledge you need.

This qualification provides learners with an in-depth understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school and college environments. It covers all aspects of specialist support including: planning; delivering and reviewing assessment strategies to support learning alongside the teacher; bilingual support; special needs support; personal development and reflective practice.

…you want to work with children or young adults in a classroom situation

…you want to be a classroom assistant or learning and support assistant

The course recognises the essential support work carried out in schools and colleges, and is designed to help progression and transfer across the children’s workforce within schools and colleges.

You will complete 16 units throughout the year. Some will be assessed in your school/college placement, most of your units will require a written assignment to show your understanding of the topic.

You’ll be expected to gain practical experience in working in roles that support pupils’ learning in primary, secondary or ALN schools, as well as colleges for 2 days per week, as an employee or volunteer.

Full commitment to attendance and professional behaviour is required.

Following on from this course you can progress into employment in roles such as a classroom assistant or learning and support assistant.

4 x GCSE grade C and above, or Level 2 Support, teaching and learning course or Level 2 CCPLD.

Learners must be able to meet the requirements of the learning outcomes and have appropriate literacy and numeracy skills needed to complete the course. If you do not possess the above qualifications but have extensive experience working within education, we can discuss your options during the entry interview.

An entry interview with the Course Leaders will be conducted to clarify this for Level 3 Support Teaching and Learning to ensure you are on the correct course.

All learners will have to undertake a satisfactory DBS check.
