Course Overview

Classroom support in schools is vital in helping children reach their full potential – and if working in a support role appeals to you, this course will give you the knowledge you need.

This qualification provides learners with an in-depth understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school and college environments. It covers all aspects of specialist support including planning; delivering and reviewing assessment strategies to support learning alongside the teacher; bilingual support; special needs support; personal development and reflective practice.

You’ll be expected to gain practical experience in working in roles that support pupils’ learning in primary, secondary or ALN schools, as well as colleges for 1 day per week, as an employee or volunteer. If you are studying part time, then it’s important you arrange your placement before enrolling.

…you want to work with children or young adults in a classroom situation

…you want to be a classroom assistant or learning and support assistant

The course recognises the essential support work carried out in schools and colleges and is designed to help progression and transfer across the children’s workforce within schools and colleges. You will complete 16 mandatory units throughout the year, 7 units knowledge only and 9 units a combination of knowledge and practice. Some will be assessed in your school/college placement and for most units you will produce written assignments.

Each unit is assessed separately through a range of assessment methods.

This course adds support for progression and transfer across the children’s workforce within schools.

At this level you should have completed:

4 x GCSE grade C and above, or Level 2 Support, teaching and learning course, or Level 1 ESOL Course, or Level 2 CCPLD.

Learners must be able to meet the requirements of the learning outcomes and have appropriate literacy and numeracy skills needed to complete the course. If you do not possess the above qualifications but have extensive experience working within education, we can discuss your options during the entry interview.

An entry interview with the Course Leaders will be conducted to clarify this for Level 3 STL to ensure you are on the correct course.

Once your place is secured you will be required to complete a DBS check through the college.
