Course Overview

This course will give you an introduction to the world of music industry, performance and technology.

… You have a keen interest and aptitude to progress in the music sector
… You are confident in performing/technology
… You are passionate about music

Study includes performance, recording technology, sound technology and understanding music and the music industry. The course is practically based with an emphasis on developing skills across music-based projects. You also have access to a digital recording studio and industry standard performance spaces.

You will complete project work through a variety of performance, written-work, blogs, vlogs and interactive media.

You will study 6 units:

Unit 1: Exploring Music

Unit 2: Professional Development

Unit 5: Music Production

Unit 6: Sound Engineering

Unit 7: Self-promotion in the Music Industry

Unit 8: Major Music Project

 

This course is delivered through:

  • Group work

  • Classroom based learning

  • Tutorial support

You’ll plan, run and perform as part of three major music events throughout the year. Your skills as a musician and as a team member will be developed and challenged.

You’ll have access to a state-of-the-art theatre, sound and lighting facilities, which will be used to perform music nights. You’ll also have access to our Mac suites with Logic X for recording.

You’ll be assessed regularly through internal assessment, both practically and theoretically and you’ll achieve:

  • BTEC Level 2 Music

  • Skills Activities

  • Maths and English

  • Other relevant qualifications to enhance your skill set

To enrol, you’ll need a minimum of 4 GCSEs Grade D or above to include either Maths/Maths Numeracy or English/Welsh First Language, or an appropriate Level 1 Diploma qualification in the relevant vocational area, to include either GCSE Maths/Maths Numeracy or English/Welsh First Language grade.

You will be expected to play an instrument, or sing, in order to take part in performance weeks.

Full commitment to attendance is required, as well as respect for others, enthusiasm for the subject, self-motivation, creative ability and a desire to succeed. You’ll need an interest in performing arts and modern music development.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music?or Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music Technology.

Further study would enable you to consider the following careers:

Event manager, PPC Specialist, Radio Broadcast Assistant, Radio Producer, Theatre Stage Manager, Composer, Media and Communication (Music Industries), Musical Theatre, Song Writing, Sound Engineering, Sound Technology, Stage Management, Background Singer, Blogger, Booking Agent, DJ, Event Manager, Instrument Technician, Music Teacher, Music Therapist, Musical Director, Orchestra/Session Musician, Recording Engineer, Singer, Tour Manager, Music Producer, Music Journalist, Concert Promoter, A&R Manager.

You will take part in an audition at the start of the course.
