Course Overview

The aim of this qualification is to recognise the skills, knowledge and competences required for an individual to administer emergency first aid, and to recognise and manage illness and injury in the workplace. This includes being able to assess, diagnose and treat casualties before the arrival of medically trained staff.

This Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work is suitable for individuals who are required to act as a designated first aider in the workplace, as well as those looking to develop comprehensive, industry-recognised emergency response skills. It is ideal for employees across a wide range of sectors—including higher-risk environments such as construction, manufacturing or sports and fitness—as well as supervisors, team leaders and health and safety personnel responsible for workplace wellbeing. The qualification is also appropriate for learners seeking to enhance their employability or broaden their professional skill set, equipping them with the knowledge, confidence and practical competence to assess incidents and provide effective first aid treatment before the arrival of medical professionals.

On this course, you will develop the practical skills and knowledge needed to respond confidently to a wide range of workplace emergencies. You will learn how to assess incidents, manage an unresponsive casualty, perform CPR, and use an automated external defibrillator (AED), as well as provide treatment for injuries such as bleeding, burns, fractures and shock. The course combines tutor-led learning with hands-on practice, giving you the opportunity to apply first aid techniques in realistic scenarios so that you feel prepared to take control and provide effective care until professional medical help arrives.

You will be expected to actively participate in both the practical and theory elements of the course, working collaboratively with others and engaging in hands-on first aid scenarios. This includes demonstrating skills such as CPR, using an AED and delivering appropriate treatments with confidence and care. You should be prepared to take responsibility for your own learning, ask questions, and reflect on your progress throughout the course. A good level of commitment, punctuality and professionalism is important, as you will be assessed on your practical competence and understanding to meet the required standards for certification.

There are no formal academic entry requirements for this course; however, learners should be aged 16 or over and have a basic level of literacy and communication skills to understand instructions and participate fully in discussions. As the course involves practical activities such as CPR and casualty management, you should be physically able to carry out these tasks on the floor. A positive attitude, willingness to engage in hands-on learning and an interest in developing life-saving skills will help you succeed.

Learners who already hold a valid First Aid at Work qualification and wish to renew it may be able to do so by attending a one-day refresher session, rather than completing the full course. This option must be agreed with the course tutor(s) in advance and will be subject to eligibility and confirmation prior to enrolment.
