Course Overview
This is a two-year course that uses a source-based approach, to study the significant events, individuals, societies, developments and issues of Greek and Roman history within their broader historical context.

The course is divided into 4 units that are taught over two years with a full A Level qualification gained at the end of the two-year course.
In the first year you will complete two modules. The first focuses on the relations between the Greek, and non-Greek, states, between 492 to 404 BC, paying particular attention to Sparta, Athens and Persia. The second investigates the reigns of Rome’s first five Emperors, Augustus, Tiberius, Gaius, Claudius and Nero.
In the second year you will complete two indepth modules. The first addresses the rise of Macedon between 359—323 BC including the career and death of Alexander the Great. The second considers the breakdown of the Late Republic between 88—31 BC and the role played by individuals such as Gnaeus Pompey, Julius Caesar, Mark Anthony and Cleopatra.
While studying this course will see you develop subject specific skills, it will also help you to develop essential transferable skills such as research skills, the ability to analyse, evaluate and communicate information and the ability to construct an argument. You will also develop your critical thinking skills, organization skills and the ability to work independently, all of which are essential for university.
Upon successful completion of the course, you’ll achieve an A Level in Ancient History, however it is possible to register for an AS qualification, the exam for which is sat at the end of the first year.
Students of Ancient History will have the opportunity to engage in masterclasses with prestigious universities, attend summer schools and participate in history-based trips to promote wider understanding of this subject.
To enrol on this course, you’ll need a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above, with a minimum of a C grade in English and Mathematics/Numeracy.
Ancient History is a well-recognized traditional academic subject which enables you to proceed to higher education or employment. Opportunities are available for Ancient History graduates in a range of professions including Law, Education, Business, Journalism, Media and Museum work.
To enrol on this course, you’ll need a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above, and a minimum of a C grade in English and Mathematics/Numeracy.
You’ll need to make financial contributions to the travel cost of educational visits. Typical visits would include local castles and heritage sites, as well as the opportunity to take part in a foreign excursion related to the A level Ancient History course.
