Preferably a minimum of 4 GCSEs grade G or above to include Maths and English/Welsh 1st Language or an appropriate Entry Level qualification.

In a nutshell

You’ll be introduced to carpentry and joinery skills as well as painting and decorating skills. To learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in carpentry or joinery.

What will I be doing?

The course covers trade specific studies, such as wood joining techniques (joinery) and basic site carpentry plus basic painting and decorating skills:

  • Principles of building construction, information and communication
  • Maintaining and using carpentry and joinery hand tools
  • Preparing and using carpentry and joinery portable power tools
  • Producing woodworking joints, basic painting and decorating skills
  • Health, safety and welfare in construction

You’ll be assessed through practical projects, written and online tests and, upon completion, you’ll gain:

  • Diploma Level 1 Carpentry and Joinery
  • Appropriate supporting qualifications to broaden your skill set and meet the needs of industry
  • Skills Activities
  • Maths and English

What is expected of me?

To enter the course, you need a minimum of 4 GCSEs, Grade E or above, to include Maths/Maths Numeracy and English/Welsh First Language or an appropriate Entry Level qualification.

You’ll need to have a desire to work in the construction industry. Full commitment to attendance is required, as is respect for others, enthusiasm for the subject and self-motivation. You’ll be continually assessed and there is an expectation that you’ll continue your studies and coursework during your own time.

What comes next?

Level 2 Diploma Site Carpentry or Bench Joinery, an Apprenticeship or other employment.

ALL learners will need to undertake a construction industry assessment to help determine the most appropriate course.
