Course Overview
This Level 1 course provides an introductory understanding of the automotive industry. It is ideal for learners who wish to progress onto the service, repair and maintenance of cars and light vehicles.
With successful completion it can potentially lead onto a Level 2 Diploma Course in Motor Vehicle or follow an apprenticeship in industry/repair and maintenance.

The course is a combination of practical and theoretical elements.
You will learn by completing workshop tasks and classroom activities that are based on realistic workplace situations. You will study units including:
Motor Vehicle Systems such as;
- Engine systems
- Lubrication
- Fuel
- Exhausts
- Brakes
- Steering
- Suspension
- Transmission
You will also study;
- Health & Safety
- Working Relationships
You’ll be assessed through:
- On-line exams
- Coursework
- Pracyical assessments
On completion of the course you will achieve:
- Level 1 Diploma in Motor Vehicle Maintenance.

- Other relevant qualifications to enhance your skill set
- Skills Activities
- Maths and English (Maths and English upskilling to a grade of C or above, will be integrated into teaching timetable)
Successful completion of an Entry Level 3 course or a Level 1 award within a Motor Vehicle or Engineering programme.
OR
4 GCSEs – 2 GCSE at grade D (ideally Maths and English) and at least 2 GCSE at D-G grades or 4 GCSEs at grade E.
You’ll need to be interested
- in Automotive Service and Repair
- be self-motivated, hardworking, punctual and committed
- Level 2 Diploma in Motor Vehicle Engineering.
- Level 2 Fast Fit Diploma
- Progression onto a suitable apprenticeship or employment
Successful completion of an Entry Level 3 course or a Level 1 award within a Motor Vehicle or Engineering programme.
4 GCSEs – 2 GCSEs at grade D (ideally Maths and English) and at least 2 GCSEs at D-G grades.
You will also develop essential employability skills:
- self-management, team working, business awareness and customer awareness, problem-solving, communication, basic literacy and numeracy, a positive attitude to work
- You will need to supply your own stationery e.g. folders, subject dividers, pens, pencils, rule and Personal Protective Equipment (boots and overalls)
