Coleg Gwent childcare students enjoy placement in Poland
Four Blaenau Gwent Learning Zone childcare students returned from Poland recently where they enjoyed a three week work placement in a school working with special needs pupils.
The exciting opportunity for the Level 3 Year 2 students took place at the school, Zespol Placowek Specjalnych, near the city of Legnica. The school includes a separate High School and a special needs school which is based at three different sites, one of which is residential housing 32 pupils.
The Coleg Gwent students were on placement at the special needs school, visiting all three sites.
During the trip the students, Rhiannon Holpin, Shannon Jones, Jade Slimmon, and Holly Morgan along with lecturers Elaine Warner and Samantha Robson were able to compare the teaching methods, facilities and therapies that were offered.
Lecturer, Elaine Warner said: “This was the first student trip to the special needs school and we had the privilege of visiting the President of Legnica. It was a really interesting couple of weeks with the students able to visit all three of the school sites seeing the different levels of abilities of children. We are really pleased that more students will have the opportunity to go again next year.”
“The aim of the trip was to experience the differences in cultures and educational provision for children with learning disabilities. Our students had the opportunity to work in the special needs school and were supported by Polish students who gave their time to be translators for the duration of our visit, which in turn gave them the opportunity to practice their English.
Two of the students, Rhiannon and Shannon are also on placement at Pen y Cwm Special School so the trip gave them the opportunity to compare the different teaching methods and therapies used with the children,” added Elaine.
