Taking the flight path
Coleg Gwent engineering learner on course to become one of the UK’s youngest female pilots
13 February 2026
A Coleg Gwent learner is demonstrating how technical education can open the door to ambitious and exciting career pathways, as she works towards becoming one of the UK’s youngest female commercial pilots.
Aimee Russell is currently in her second year of an Extended Level 3 Diploma in Aerospace Engineering at HiVE campus.
Her journey highlights the breadth of opportunities available through vocational pathways and reflects the key message of National Apprenticeship Week (9–15 February).
Aimee’s interest in aviation began at a young age after attending the Royal International Air Tattoo with her father, an electrical engineer and aviation enthusiast. This early exposure sparked a lasting passion that developed through plane spotting, learning about electronics, and eventually taking her first flying lesson at just 13 years old, a moment that confirmed her ambition to become a pilot.
After leaving Ebbw Fawr School in 2024 at the age of 16, Aimee enrolled at HiVE to study Aerospace Engineering. Since starting her course, she has shown exceptional commitment both to her studies and to inspiring others. She is an enthusiastic STEM ambassador and actively supports outreach activities, including school visits and taster days, encouraging younger learners to consider careers in STEM.

“My dad has always encouraged me to follow my dreams. He supported me by funding my flying lessons and spending time helping me understand electrical circuits and pathways. That’s helped me massively on my course, and I can even help fix electrical appliances at home. I’ve even helped to rewire our kitchen during a refit.”
Aimee’s achievements also extend beyond the classroom. In 2024, she was selected by British Airways as one of just 12 students nationally to take part in its competitive work experience programme at Cardiff Airport, standing out among more than 1,000 applicants.
Alexis Dabee-Saltmarsh, Lecturer in Motorsports, Aerospace and Composite Engineering, said:
“Aimee is an exemplary student. Despite being the only female learner on her course, she is confident, driven and highly capable. Her flying experience has given her valuable transferable skills that really enhance her learning.”
“The HiVE campus provides an exceptional environment for developing practical, industry-relevant skills. Aimee’s understanding of aerospace engineering is already impressive, and we’re excited to see her continue her journey towards becoming a pilot.”
Aimee will complete her Level 3 Extended Diploma this summer and plans to apply for a flight training programme with a major airline, with the aim of qualifying as a commercial pilot within the next 18–24 months.
Congratulations Aimee. We’re incredibly proud of your achievements and look forward to you flying us to our holiday destinations in the not-too-distant future!
