Course Overview
Level 2 Hairdressing builds on the foundation skills which are developed at Level 1 Hairdressing and sets you on the path towards working as a professional hairdresser. The course is based around working in our professional training salons with clients.

The hairdressing sector is fast moving and you will be working in college salons to gain an in-depth understanding of the skills needed to work as a hairdresser.
Technical Proficiency: Developing a variety of cutting, colouring, and styling techniques that will set you apart in the industry.
Communication: Learn to effectively engage with clients, understand their needs, and build lasting relationships.
Creativity: Develop your personal style and learn how to create looks that appeal to a diverse clientele.
Professionalism: Understand the importance of maintaining a professional image and environment in your practice.
The course is delivered through a combination of theory and practical workshops and is heavily based in commercial salon sessions.
You’ll also have the opportunity to engage in:
- Industry talks from experts in the field of hairdressing
- In house competitions and the opportunity to enter Inspiring Skills Excellence in Wales and UK/World Skills competitions
- Industry interviews
You will work on developing your skills in a range of practical and theory sessions, working towards assessments in both your skills and understanding of the sector. There are several online exams as well as a range of practical assessments with clients.
In terms of qualifications, you need a minimum Level 1 Diploma in either Hairdressing or Level 1 Diploma in Hair and Beauty, and either GCSE Maths/Numeracy or English/Welsh 1st Language grade D or above.
You will be ready to work within the setting of a professional training salon, working with clients under supervision as part of your development in the industry.
Level 3 in Hairdressing or employment at a senior apprentice level.
Level 1 Diploma in Hairdressing or Level 1 Diploma in Hair and Beauty, and either GCSE Maths/Numeracy or English/Welsh 1st Language grade D or above.
As a condition of your place on this course, you will be expected to purchase the appropriate kit, from our approved supplier, costing approximately £82 – £91 subject to review/inflationary price increase.
To reflect industry expectations, you will be required to wear a Coleg Gwent salon uniform which is to be ordered from our approved supplier. Details on how to order your uniform, with supplier payment options, can be obtained from your Head of School, Lecturer or Technician. The price for is around £45, subject to review/inflationary price increase.
Additional costs could occur during the year for educational visits.
