Course Overview

If you work in the engineering and manufacturing sectors, this course will give you better knowledge and skills of fabrication and welding by covering a range of industry-recognised welding techniques, giving you an in-depth understanding of the welding processes, their applications and the equipment, materials and consumables used.

…anyone working in engineering and manufacturing.

The course covers the Metal Active/Inert Gas Shielding (MAGS/MIGS), Manual Metal Arc (MMA), Tungsten Active/Inert Gas Shielding (TAGS/TIGS) and also Oxy-Fuel Burning welding processes, and you’ll need to complete a range of welded joints in various welding positions to the BSEN 4872 welding standard. These welded joints will then undergo various destructive tests before being visually assessed by the assessor.

You’ll need to recognise and identify basic welding defects showing how to rectify and prevent any faults that can occur, and to adjust and set the conditions for welding in line with relevant specifications and weld procedures.

You’ll also need to prepare for welding by obtaining the necessary job instructions, materials, tools, equipment and any documentation, and check and inspect the welding equipment to make sure it’s in a safe working condition and suitable for the welding to be undertaken.

On completing this course, you could move on to City & Guilds Level 3 Advanced Welding.

You’ll need Level 1 Fabrication & Welding, City & Guilds Level 2 Advanced Welding or a minimum of 2 years ‘ industry experience of the selected welding processes or an interview to assess your skills.

You’ll need to provide your own Personal Protective Equipment (steel toe cap boots and fire retardant overalls).
