Course Overview

This is a broad yet astute insight into the world of law and legal studies.

…you want to progress to higher education in this field

…you’d like a career in law

…you’re interested in following the Law Pathway, the Humanities pathway or the Business pathway.

AS Level Law

The AS units cover the study of the Welsh and English Legal systems and the nature of law, focusing on the structure of the Welsh and English legal systems, including their relationship with the European Union.

The modules also cover the study of the law of tort. The law of tort requires learners to develop knowledge and understanding of liability in negligence for injury to people. It will be required to apply the elements of the law of negligence to hypothetical scenarios.

Students will learn about the consideration of sources of primary and secondary law in the Welsh and English legal systems and how those laws are used by judges in making decisions. They will develop knowledge and understanding of the criminal justice system and civil justice system, including relevant legal personnel and legal funding. They will develop knowledge and understanding of occupiers’ liability.

Learners will also develop knowledge and understanding of remedies, including damages, mitigation of loss and injunctions.

A Level Law

Those who pass AS Law can progress to study Law at A2 Level. The A2 units cover the study of two further areas of law, from a choice of Human Rights Law, Law of Contract and Criminal Law. Throughout the course, you can measure your progress through class work, homework and mock examinations. Assessment includes essays and problem questions or case studies.

Upon completion of the course, you’ll achieve:

  • AS Level Law
  • A Level Law

To enter the course, you’ll need a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade A*-C including a minimum of a C grade in English/Welsh First Language and Mathematics.

AS Law must be successfully completed before progressing to A2 Level.

If you’re planning on progressing to university, you’ll find a wide range of related courses, including degrees in law, business, management, accountancy and social services. Alternatively, law is a useful component of a general humanities course.

Minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C or above including English/Welsh 1st Language and Mathematics/Numeracy.

You’ll need to make financial contributions to the travel cost of educational visits.
