Course Overview

Studying A Level English Literature allows plenty of scope for discussion and the development of your own ideas. It provides learners with an introduction to the discipline of advanced literary studies and presents opportunities for reading widely and for making creative and informed responses to each of the major literary genres of poetry, prose and drama.

… You want to follow the English and Writing pathway but also studying this transferable subject will provide good access to most of the A level pathway.

… You enjoy reading literature.

… You like to analyse and discuss literature.

… You work well with written essays and assignments.

You’ll study two units at AS and three units at A Level. Throughout the course, you’ll be encouraged to read widely and independently whilst being taught how to analyse, evaluate and compare a range of literary texts from different cultural contexts.

At AS, you’ll study Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility (prose), Oscar Wilde’s Lady Windermere’s Fan (drama), and a collection of poetry from Philip Larkin – The Whitsun Weddings, and Carol Ann Duffy – Mean Time. At A Level, you’ll study Shakespeare’s Hamlet (drama), a collection of poems by Christina Rosetti and will produce a coursework folder of 2,500-3,500 words, following study of John Fowles’ The Collector, and a text chosen by you.

You’ll be assessed by regular homework, class work test marks and mock examination grades, which will enable you to measure your progress. At AS Level, you’ll be formally assessed by two summer examinations and, at A Level, by coursework and two summer examinations. Upon completion, you’ll achieve:
