Entry Requirements
A basic level of maths (at least Entry 3) and English (at least Level 1) you will also have achieved a Level 1 Diploma at grade pass or above.
In a nutshell
This is a preparatory course to help learners develop employability skills in the Health and Social Care sector focusing on caring for children, current practice, health and development, health and safety, play and creative activities linking to current legislations.

What will I be doing?
Learners will build knowledge and skills including numeracy and literacy to prepare for the undertaking of a qualification in Childcare or Health and Social Care.
The course is run over 4 days in college, covering a range of topics such as:
- Career Planning
- Health and Safety
- Working to Good Practice Standards
- Effective Communication in the Work Place
- Equality and Diversity
- Interview Skills
- Work Experience (learners to complete a minimum of 50 hours work related placement)
The course will develop subject knowledge and will assess competencies in a theoretical and practical context. Learners will be required to complete internal and external assessments.
After successful completion of this course, you'll be able to go into employment or progress onto another Coleg Gwent course.
What is expected of me?
A determination to do well and passion for learning are a must for this course. Full commitment to attendance is required, including attendance to skills, as well as respect for others, enthusiasm for the subject and self-motivation.
Learners will be expected to attend a work placement as part of this course.
This course involves continual assessment which will include both theoretical and practical components. There is an expectation that you’ll continue your studies and coursework during your own time.
