Course Overview
This qualification enables learners to perform massage at a fundamental level on nonpathological tissue, perhaps as an adjunct to a personal training or gym session.
The purpose of this qualification is to provide learners with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide massage for preparation and recovery from strenuous activities.
It also meets the pre-entry requirement for the new YMCA Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy (Soft Tissue Dysfunction), the only qualification mapped to the new NOS that meets the requirements for entry to SMA for membership as sports massage therapist.

To achieve the YMCA Level 3 Diploma in Performance Massage, you will need to achieve 8 mandatory units:
- Fundamentals of anatomy and physiology (M/650/4982)
- Lifestyle management and health awareness (K/616/7949)
- Further anatomy and physiology for performance massage (L/650/1361)
- Massage professional practice (M/650/1362)
- The principles of soft tissue dysfunction (A/650/6136)
- Assessing clients and treatment planning (R/650/1363)
- Application of performance massage (Y/650/1365)
- Providing post-treatment care advice (T/650/1364)
There are no formal pre-requisites for learners wishing to embark on the Level 3 Diploma in Performance Massage Therapy.

This course is designed to support those currently working within industry or looking to further develop their professional knowledge and skills. Delivery combines on-campus practical sessions with flexible blended learning, allowing you to develop your expertise alongside work and other commitments. This course has 2 different delivery methods and runs part-time as either day provision or evening provision.
For the day provision you will attend campus every Monday from 09:00 – 16:30 for practical, hands-on delivery and skills development.
A further 6 hrs of learning is timetabled every Tuesday 08:30 – 15:30. This session will be delivered through a flexible blended approach, which may include live online teaching using a range of communication technologies, workshop sessions, industry-based activities, portfolio development and on-campus support where required.
For the evening provision you will attend campus every Tuesday from 16:00 – 21:00 for practical, hands-on delivery and skills development.
A further 7.5hrs of learning is timetabled every Thursday from 09:00 – 16:00. This session will be delivered through a flexible blended approach, which may include live online teaching using a range of communication technologies, workshop sessions, industry-based activities, portfolio development and on-campus support where required.
