This is a great course if you would like to work in the equine industry and further your education journey. There is a 'ride' and a 'non-ride' alternative, the course provides for all elements of stable management skills. You will study theoretical and practical aspects of the subject and apply them to practical tasks.

What will I be doing?
You will study a range of both practical and theoretical subjects that will include:
- Introduction to lunging
- Horse tack and equipment
- Routine Stable Duties
- Feeding and watering horses
- Horse handling and grooming
- Anatomy and physiology of horses
- Equine health and welfare
- Work experience
You will be assessed in a variety of ways which will include assignments, controlled assessments and exams.
You will benefit from the excellent facilities at the equestrian centre which is a BHS approved exam centre to intermediate instructor level. It’s a compact, well equipped equestrian unit, including a stable yard which houses up to 15 horses for you to use for your riding and practical sessions. There are two full size modern all-weather surfaces, one of which is indoors, show jumps, a cross country schooling area and grazing paddocks.
The centre is staffed by an experienced, well qualified team who supervise and support you when undertaking yard duties and work experience. Through working in the college yard your understanding of horse care will be broadened.
The course is assessed through both practical assessment and written assignments to show your understanding. On completion you’ll achieve:
- Level 2 Technical Certificate in Equine Care
- Appropriate supporting qualifications to broaden your skill set and meet the needs of industry
- Skills Activities
- Maths and English
What is expected of me?
Full commitment to attendance is required. Respect for others, enthusiasm for the subject and self-motivation along with a passion for equine studies are the essential qualities we expect to see in all our learners.
You will be continually assessed and there is an expectation that you will continue your studies and coursework/work placement during your own time.
If riding, you will also need to purchase a Riding hat (to current BHS standards), yard boots, jodhpurs, riding boots, gloves . These costs vary. You will also be requred to wear a body protector - supplied.
Our yard has a riding weight limit of 90kg to ensure the health and wellbeing of our horses and a riding assessment will be part of the process. All applicants can study a ride or non - riding option.
Additional costs could be incurred during the year for educational visits.
BHS exams will be an additional cost for which a BHS membership is required.
What comes next?
Level 3 Extended Diploma Horse Management, BHS higher level qualifications or employment in the equine industry.

Please note that this is not only a practical course, there is an amount of written work included.
You’ll need an up to date tetanus injection before starting on the course.
Personal protective equipment (PPE) will be required for the practical aspects of the programme including riding boots, Jodhpurs and a riding hat to the current safety standards. You will need to purchase these in advance of the course starting.
BHS exams will be an additional cost for which a BHS membership is also required.
