Anyone who is interested in becoming a nail technician. Willing to work on paying clients to build clientele, gain confidence and speed in their development.

You will also need to be self-motivated, hardworking, have a friendly personality and a high level of personal presentation. You should be committed to full attendance and punctuality for all sessions to achieve your qualification.

What will I be doing?

The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Nail Technology brings together all the required elements to work effectively as a professional nail technician.

Mandatory topics include:

  • Providing manicures and pedicures
  • Applying and maintaining nail enhancements
  • Maintaining personal health and well-being
  • Health and safety and client care.


Optional specialist topics may include:

  • Designing and applying nail art
  • Air brush designs
  • Enhancing nails with electric files

You’ll also develop your knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology, health and safety, client care and cosmetic beauty products and equipment. The course will also teach you a range of technical skills to prepare the skin and apply a variety of nail enhancement treatments using different techniques, plus interpersonal skills to help you communicate effectively with clients.

The qualification is based on the beauty therapy National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK's leading professional association, the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC). Once you’ve gained this qualification you’re eligible to become a professional member of BABTAC.

You’ll be expected to work on realistic clients in a commercial environment and also be responsible for developing your own 'client base' – although this qualification allows you to gather evidence in a realistic working environment without the need for fee paying clients.

You’ll be assessed using a combination of practical assessments for each unit, assignments and projects and multiple choice tests covering the underpinning knowledge.

The course is designed to help you find a job as a nail technician, enabling you to join a professional association and get the necessary insurance to work in the industry.

You're expecyed to complete both practical assessments and theory assignments for each unit.

This qualification will prepare you for employment as a nail technician. You will also be eligible to join a professional association and gain insurance as a nail technician. Career opportunities as a nail technician exist in a variety of contexts.

Additional information

The dress code for our salon is:

  • Tunic with trousers and black shoes
  • Hair neatly tied back off the face
  • Nail extensions and varnish must not be worn
  • No piercings – only a wedding ring can be worn

As a condition of your place on this course, you will be expected to purchase the appropriate kit, from our approved supplier, costing approximately £170 subject to review/inflationary price increase.

To reflect industry expectations, you will be required to wear a Coleg Gwent salon uniform which is to be ordered from our approved supplier. Details on how to order your uniform, with supplier payment options, can be obtained from your Head of School, Lecturer or Technician. The price for 2024/2025 is around £45, subject to inflationary price increase.

Additional costs could occur during the year for educational visits.
