In a nutshell

Do you want to become a talented nail technician?

This comprehensive vocational course is designed to give you the best preparation possible for a career as a nail technician, with a nationally-recognised qualification.

This course is for...

… anyone working or wanting to work as a nail technician.

... those wanting to learn a new profession alongside their current employment.

... people with an interest in nail technology and the beauty industry.

... people who are creative, with attention to detail.

Course content

The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Nail Technology brings together all the required elements to work effectively as a professional nail technician.

Mandatory topics include:

  • Providing manicures and pedicures
  • Applying and maintaining nail enhancements
  • Maintaining personal health and well-being
  • Health and safety and client care.

Optional specialist topics may include:

  • Designing and applying nail art
  • Air brush designs
  • Enhancing nails with electric files

You’ll also develop your knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology, health and safety, client care and cosmetic beauty products and equipment. The course will also teach you a range of technical skills to prepare the skin and apply a variety of nail enhancement treatments using different techniques, plus interpersonal skills to help you communicate effectively with clients.

The qualification is based on the beauty therapy National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK's leading professional association, the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC). Once you’ve gained this qualification you’re eligible to become a professional member of BABTAC.

You’ll be expected to work on realistic clients in a commercial environment and also be responsible for developing your own 'client base' – although this qualification allows you to gather evidence in a realistic working environment without the need for fee paying clients.

You’ll be assessed using a combination of practical assessments for each unit, assignments and projects and multiple choice tests covering the underpinning knowledge.

The course is designed to help you find a job as a nail technician, enabling you to join a professional association and get the necessary insurance to work in the industry.

Entry Requirements

To enter this course, you need to be 16 or over. You’ll need to be self-motivated, hardworking, have a friendly personality and a high level of personal presentation. You should be committed to full attendance and punctuality for all sessions.
