Course Overview

A level 4 sports massage practitioner’s role includes planning, providing and evaluating sport massage treatments to seek to correct common patterns of dysfunction, and/or pre-diagnosed injuries, using a range of basic and advanced massage techniques.

This course will cover a range of activities including:

Knowledge and understanding relating to the qualification:

  • Anatomy and physiology of the major joints of the body
  • The pathophysiology of common injuries/soft tissue patterns of dysfunction
  • The principles and practice of objective assessment techniques and the influences and effects which such information has upon treatment planning
  • How heat and ice may be used to safely support the soft tissue repair process
  • The purpose and use of a range of soft tissue mobilisation and neuromuscular techniques used within sports massage therapy

Skills relating to the qualification:

  • Conducting subjective and objective assessments
  • Devising sports massage treatment plans to help correct identified areas of soft tissue dysfunction and /or support the soft tissue repair process of previously diagnosed injuries
  • Application of a range of soft tissue mobilisation and neuromuscular techniques
  • Evaluation of sports massage treatments

Learners must hold a Level 3 Diploma in Performance Massage Therapy or equivalent.

This course is designed to support those currently working within industry or looking to further develop their professional knowledge and skills. Delivery combines on-campus practical sessions with flexible blended learning, allowing you to develop your expertise alongside work and other commitments. This course has 2 different delivery methods and runs part-time as either day provision or evening provision.

For the day provision you will attend campus every Monday from 09:00 – 16:30 for practical, hands-on delivery and skills development.

A further 3.5 hrs of learning is timetabled every Friday 08:30 – 12:00. This session will be delivered through a flexible blended approach, which may include live online teaching using a range of communication technologies, workshop sessions, industry-based activities, portfolio development and on-campus support where required.

For the evening provision you will attend campus every Tuesday from 16:00 – 21:00 for practical, hands-on delivery and skills development.

A further 5hrs of learning is timetabled every Thursday from 09:00 – 14:30. This session will be delivered through a flexible blended approach, which may include live online teaching using a range of communication technologies, workshop sessions, industry-based activities, portfolio development and on-campus support where required.
