What will I be doing?

The course will include the study of public service skills, career planning and improving health and fitness for entry to the uniformed public and protective services. You'll have the opportunity to take part in activities such as first aid, outdoor activities, expedition skills and Duke of Edingburgh.

You'll practice skills and techniques in realistic work-based college environments to give you a flavour of the workplace as well as visits to local fire stations and other emergency service environments.

Core units will include:

  • Employment in the Uniformed Public Services
  • Activities and Teamwork
  • Expedition Skills and Land Navigation
  • Public Services Skills and Support

You'll also study topics that help your personal and social development, including:

  • Career Planning
  • Participating in Exercise
  • Healthy Lifestyles
  • Community Action
  • Practicing Leadership Skills
  • Presentation Skills

Throughout the course, you'll be assessed through assignments, tasks and practical assessments to ultimately achieve:

  • BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Teamwork & Personal Development in the Community
  • Princes Trust Level 1 Certificate in Personal Development Employability Skills
  • Skills Activities (If you haven't achieved a Grade C or above in Maths and English/Welsh First Language, then you'll need to attend skills classes alongside your studies)
  • Other relevant qualifications to enhance your skill set

What is expected of me?

There are no formal entry requirements, but you'll need to be motiviated, hardworking and willing to have a go at each of the vocational options. You'll also need to be committed to full attendance and being punctual for all sessions. Students that choose this route may have achieved GCSE's at Grade D-G and some may have achieved higher but be certian about the route they want to study.

What comes next?

To enter the course, you'll need a minimum of four GCSE's Grade D or above to include Maths/Maths Numeracy or English/Welsh First Language or an appropirate Level 1 Diploma Qualification in the relevant vocational area to include either GCSE Maths/Maths Numeracy or English/Welsh First Language.

Full commitment to attendance is required, as well as respect for others, enthusiasm for the subject and self-motivation. You'll be continually assessed and there is an expectation that you'll continue your studies and coursework during your own time.

Additional information

You’ll be expected to purchase outdoor and sports kit up to the value of £95, plus £40 for D of E Registration.
