Good times at Crosskeys Campus Happy Cafe

Good times at Crosskeys Campus Happy Cafe

Staff and students at Coleg Gwent's Crosskeys Campus celebrated World Mental Health Day with the relaunch of their Happy Café and staff wellbeing club.

As well as enjoying free cake, biscuits and coffee those who attended received leaflets on how to look after their mental health.

Mental health in the workplace was the theme of World Mental Health Day 2017, with the overall objective of raising awareness and mobilising efforts in support of better mental health.

Poor mental health is one of the biggest issues in the workplace today, causing over 70 million working days to be lost each year.

School of Care lecturer, Victoria English explained that the aim of the staff wellbeing group is not only to give advice but to encourage staff to connect on an informal level and plan social events.
"Sessions will include subjects such as mindfulness, 'Action for Happiness', yoga, recommended podcasts and films, walking for health, and nutrition," said Victoria.

The College’s Happy Café is part of the worldwide Happy Café network, created by Action for Happiness, a global movement that says it aims to promote emotional wellbeing based on the latest scientific research.  There are over 50 cafes in the network, both in the UK and overseas in countries including Australia, the Philippines, the US, Italy and Germany. The Cross Keys Café is the first of its kind in Wales.
Happy Cafés provide a warm welcome for anyone interested in happiness and wellbeing - and encourage them to meet together for a drink and friendly chat. The Cafés also display inspiring and informative material to encourage people to discover new ways of improving their own wellbeing and to help make others happier too.
