Independent Living Skills

Build confidence, independence, and real-life skills

Ever felt like school missed out the important stuff – like how to manage money, cook a meal, or plan your future?

Our Independent Living Skills courses (ILS) are for those with Additional Learning Needs (ALN) to help improve their skills towards an independent life in the community.

You’ll learn practical, everyday skills that help you live more independently, feel more confident, and get ready for whatever’s next – whether that’s further education, employment, or living on your own.

Learn in spaces designed for real life

It’s a safe space where you can learn at your own pace, try new things, and feel supported every step of the way.

At Coleg Gwent, you’ll learn in calm, supportive settings that feel like home. Our facilities include:

  • Fully equipped kitchens for hands-on cooking
  • Comfortable bungalow and independent living flats
  • Relaxing garden spaces and outdoor areas
  • Dedicated specialist classrooms for focused learning

What you’ll learn

And along the way, our supportive team will help you to develop your reading, math and teamwork skills, that will help you in everyday life.

Our ILS courses focus on both practical skills and personal development, helping you grow in confidence and prepare for independent living. You’ll cover essential topics and creative activities like:

  • Budgeting and managing your money
  • Cooking and meal planning
  • Planning your next steps into work or education
  • Building confidence and communication
  • Being active and involved in your community
  • Gardening and growing your own food
  • Arts and crafts
  • IT and digital skills

Learn by doing

It’s not all about the classroom. You’ll take part in visits to local shops, museums, and community spaces – practicing your skills in real-world settings. You’ll also get involved in projects like fundraising and enterprise, which build teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills.

The best thing about ILS is my communicator, she’s so funny and makes learning fun! The tutors are great too, and I’ve made lots of new friends. We get to try everything, cooking, painting, gardening, music, and sports, and we even go on trips to learn how to use public transport.
