Course Overview

The BHS Stage 3 (Care & Lunge) course is aimed at riders and equestrian professionals seeking to build on their existing knowledge of horse care and stable management. It focuses on developing confident, practical skills in lunging and the day-to-day management of horses. This course is ideal for those progressing within the equine industry or preparing to take the BHS Stage 3 (Care & Lunge) assessment.

  • Individuals aiming to progress through the BHS career pathways.

  • Dedicated horse owners wanting to deepen their knowledge and practical skills.

  • Those preparing for the BHS Stage 3 Care & Lunge assessment.

  • Equestrian professionals working toward senior roles within the industry.

The Stage 3 Care qualification provides comprehensive training in horse care, focusing on the key responsibilities and skills needed as a Groom. Learners will explore the roles, rights, and responsibilities associated with the position, including managing stable environments, caring for horses, and ensuring their health and safety.

The course covers practical skills such as tack fitting, using studs, and understanding different bits, as well as addressing the nutritional needs and fitness requirements of horses. Learners will also study horse anatomy, physiology, and how to assess and manage common health conditions.

Additionally, the course examines horse behaviour, including how to manage undesirable behaviours, and provides guidance on turnout and pasture management. Students will learn how to assess a horse’s conformation and ensure that they are physically fit and healthy.

By the end of the course, learners will be equipped with the knowledge and practical skills needed to manage horses effectively, promote equine welfare, and maintain high standards of care within the equine industry.

While there are no formal entry requirements for this course, it is recommended that you have completed the BHS Stage 2 qualification or possess equivalent skills and experience at this level. A solid understanding of basic equine care, stable management, and riding skills will help ensure you get the most out of the course.

Learners should be at least 19 years of age. This course is ideal for those looking to further develop their knowledge and practical skills in equine care, and it serves as a great preparation for those aiming to pursue the BHS Stage 3 qualification.

This course is led by one of our BHS-qualified instructors and takes place in the evening.

To participate, you’ll need a correctly fitted riding hat that meets current safety standards, as well as yard or riding boots and gloves.

Please note, this course is designed to prepare learners for the Care and Lunge sections of the BHS Stage 3 qualification. However, it does not include the assessments.
