Course Overview

An apprenticeship in Carpentry is a 3 ½ year course where you are employed by a construction company and attend college 1 day/week.

While on site with your employer you will be gaining skills and experience working on carpentry jobs. At first, you will be doing low level jobs and helping qualified carpentry to do their work; but over time, you will gain experience so that you can do carpentry jobs yourself. At the end of the course you will be assessed on site doing a range of jobs. This is called the “Final Practical Project” where a college assessor will visit you over a number of days to confirm your competence.

Technical training is provided in the college 1 day per week, including time in practical workshops.

You will study a variety of subject-specific modules, in addition to Literacy and Numeracy skills if required.

The programme is delivered through a blend of the following:

Training in a realistic work environment
Theory lessons in well-equipped classrooms
Work Based assessor visits
Discussions
Demonstrations
1:1 and group tutorial sessions
Practical sessions with excellent workshop facilities
Essential Skills
This may include a combination of Application of Number, Communication, Digital Literacy and Essential Employability Skills if required.

Minimum of 2 GCSE Grade A*-D in English or Welsh and Mathematics.

or

You should have achieved a Level 1 or Level 2 post-16 qualification in Construction.
and

have at least one year of life skills gained after compulsory education.
and

Apprentices must have an employer who can cover the apprenticeship qualification criteria.

This apprenticeship can be completed in 3 years if you hold a Level 2 Core in Construction or Building Services Engineering which are also available via our full and part-time offer.
