FAQs for full time students

We have regular open events throughout the year, designed to give you all the information you need to make sure you choose the right course and find out what financial support is available. You’ll find details of our open events here. In fact, why not register now and save time on the day?

For any of our full time courses you can apply right away.  Applications are dealt with on a first come, first served basis so getting yours in as early as you can gives you a better chance of being offered a place.

If you know what you want to do, you can browse courses by subject or use our course search tool on the right hand side and click on the name for more details.  If you’d like some inspiration, our latest videos will help you explore your career options and show you what current students are doing.

Once you’ve decided on your course, just click ‘apply’ on the course information page to get started. If this is the first time you’ve submitted an online application, you’ll be asked to create an account by choosing a username and password.

If you are applying to study AS Levels you should go the course information page for one of the subjects you would like to take. At the end of the application you will be able to select all the AS subjects you are interested in applying for, which will add them all to your application.

We only take one application at a time but if you decide the course you chose isn’t for you during the process, we can change your application. Please get in touch with us if you would like to make any changes or if you would like advice and guidance on making the right course choice for your career goals.

Firstly, you’ll be given a conditional offer of a place. For certain courses you may be asked to complete an assessment or take part in an audition. If so, we’ll give you more details when we offer you a place.

If you’ve not heard anything within a week of applying, call Admissions on 01495 333777. They’ll be able to let you know the status of your application and what happens next.

Our Career Pathways tool will help you to work through your options and discover different jobs, as well as the qualifications you need to get there. Plus, you can view helpful information such as salary and availability of roles. You can also speak to our Student Recruitment Team for advice and guidance on the right course choice for you.

The entry criteria can be found on the course information page on our website and it will specifically advise if an interview is needed.

If you need to have an interview and can’t make your appointment, just call our Admissions team on 01495 333777 and we’ll rearrange it.

No, you need to accept your offer and meet the conditions to reserve your place.  You’ll also need to enrol before the start of term, and we’ll let you know in July when you need to enrol, which will be some time in August.

There are no tuition fees for any of our full time further education courses, but if you’re a full time learner, you’ll have to pay a £10 administration fee when you enrol.  There might be other costs to pay, such as membership fees, studio fees, salon fees and exam fees.  We’ll let you know about these when you come for your interview. You can find out more about getting help with costs and financial support then, or you can simply contact Admissions on 01495 333777 for more information.

For some courses you’ll need essential kit or equipment, such as safety equipment, hairdressing and beauty kits, uniform or books.  This information is usually on the course information page on our website, but if you’re unsure, our Admissions team will be happy to help on 01495 333777.

Course times vary, but you should expect to be in college from Monday to Friday for anything between 9am-5pm.  You’ll find out the exact days and times for your course when you get your timetable at induction.

If you’ve already applied and have had a conditional offer, we’ll send you a letter inviting you to an enrolment session.   If you haven’t applied yet, it’s not too late to join us in September.  Apply online now or call our Admissions team on 01495 333777 and they’ll let you know what you need to do.

Your invitation to enrol will include details of what you need to bring.  Typically you’ll need:

  • One form of personal identification, e.g. passport, national insurance card
  • Your National insurance number
  • A travel letter from your local authority (if applicable) and the admin fee for your bus pass (16-18 year olds £10.00, 19 years plus £40.00)
  • Your learner administration fee (£10.00) payable by all full time learners
  • Your exam result slip or proof of qualifications to show you meet your course conditions
  • Any course or PPE fees, if needed

After your enrolment in August, you’ll be told more about your first classes and timetable for September, which will be available on the student app CG Connect.

If you haven’t already enrolled, call our Student Recruitment team on 01495 333777.  They can offer advice and guidance to help you decide on a course that’s right for you. If you’ve already enrolled and started college, make sure you talk to us as soon as you start to have any doubts.  If it’s within the first six weeks of starting, contact Learner Services and we’ll do our best to transfer you to a more suitable course. If it’s after the first six weeks, you can get support and advice at any time by talking to your Personal Tutor, Head of Learner Services or Learner Services on your campus.

Financial support and transport

There are lots of grants and financial support funds available, many of which depend on your household income and personal circumstances. For more details, contact the Customer Services team on 01495 333777.

If you’re aged 16 to 18 and live in Newport, Torfaen, Caerphilly or Blaenau Gwent, you can apply to your local authority (LA) for a bus pass. If you live in Monmouthshire, you can apply direct to the college at enrolment and pay £10.00 per term, plus £1.50 per single journey.  If you’re over 18, you can apply for a Coleg Gwent concessionary bus pass at enrolment and pay £40.00 per term plus £1.50 per single journey.

You might also qualify for our Leaner Support Fund (LSF), which could help with the cost of your bus pass.  Contact Learner Services at your campus for an application form.  If you’re aged 16 to 18, you’ll still need to also apply to your local authority.

FAQs for part-time time students

Anyone over the age of 19 at the start of the academic year can apply for a standard part-time course with us.

Learners under the age of 19, at the start of the academic year, cannot automatically apply for or enrol onto a standard part-time course due to government funding guidelines. We therefore recommend those learners review our enhanced part-time and full-time courses instead, which are fully funded. If you have any questions regarding this you can contact our Student Recruitment Team on 01495 333777 or at hello@coleggwent.ac.uk and they can provide further guidance.

On an enhanced part time course, you will normally be studying 12 – 16 hours per week and sometimes more, anywhere from 9:00am onwards on the specified day(s). Government funding is usually available, meaning there are no course fees.

For any of our part-time courses you can apply right away. Some of our part-time courses are very popular, so the sooner you apply the sooner you have chance of securing a place.

If a part-time course has a fee this will be advised on our website.

Some of our courses do offer course fee reduction for those on means tested benefits. If you are unsure if you would qualify for a fee reduction please contact our Student Recruitment Team on 01495 333777 or at hello@coleggwent.ac.uk

For some of our longer part-time courses you may be able to pay in instalments and this will be arranged with you via our Finance Team. If would like further information please contact our Student Recruitment Team on 01495 333777 or email hello@coleggwent.ac.uk

All applications are made via our website. Once you’ve found a part-time course you are interested in, just click the “Apply” button on the course page to get started. The application is separated into five easy steps and takes minutes to complete. Please ensure that your email address is correct in your application as we will send regular updates to the email address you provide.

If there are no entry requirements for a course, you should be able to progress through all the screens to enrolment. Where the course has a fee, it is payment for the course that secures your place and you will also be able to pay online as part of the application process.

If all the courses are part-time then you can apply for more than one course at a time. You just need to check the dates and times of the different courses don’t clash. You should follow the same application process for each different part-time course you want to take.

If there are any entry criteria for a course then you will firstly be given a conditional offer of a place. Once you accept that conditional offer, you will then need to upload evidence to your Coleg Gwent account that shows you meet the entry criteria for the course. This will enable your application to progress and we will provide email updates at each stage in the process.

If there are no entry requirements for this course, you should be able to progress through all the screens online yourself, make the required payment if there is a fee involved and automatically be enrolled onto the course.

If you apply for a course that is full you will either be advised there are no spaces available or, where the course has a waiting list option, you will be advised you have been added to the waiting list. If space becomes available, anyone on the waiting list will be contacted and offered it on a first come first served basis.

However, we do also recommend you check other dates that the course may be running, which could still have spaces available and you can therefore secure a place that way.

If you’ve not heard anything within a week of applying for a part-time course, call Student Recruitment on 01495 333777 or email hello@coleggwent.ac.uk and they can review your application for you.

The entry criteria can be found on the course information page on our website and it will specifically advise if an interview is needed.

For some courses you’ll need essential kit or equipment, such as safety equipment, hairdressing and beauty kits, uniform or books. This information is usually on the course information page on our website.

For standard part-time courses the days and times the course runs will be on the course information page on our website.

On an enhanced part time course, you will normally be studying 12 – 16 hours per week and sometimes more, anywhere from 9:00am onwards on the specified day(s). If you would further information regarding the timetable for an enhanced part time course please contact Student Recruitment on 01495 333777 or email hello@coleggwent.ac.uk.

Once you have reached the enrolment stage, you should receive an automated email confirmation of this. It will tell you the day and time you need to come to campus to be formally enrolled onto the course. You would normally report to Reception to do this.
