Hair and beauty students a ‘cut above the rest’

Hair and beauty students a ‘cut above the rest’

Students from two Coleg Gwent Campuses have plucked, pruned and snipped their way to victory at this year’s Salon Cymru competition at the Swalec Stadium.

Salon Cymru, organised by ISA Training, is a contemporary competition open to hairdressing and beauty learners from schools, colleges and training providers. Inspiration for the exciting, innovative categories is taken from modern icons and trends in high fashion.

Past winners have seen their careers take off in many different ways, from competing in the Paris Internationals as part of the Junior British Hairdressing Squad to appearing on primetime TV.

Coleg Gwent students from both Crosskeys Campus and the Blaenau Gwent Learning Zone competed against hairdressers from colleges and salons across Wales earlier this year in May.

Students entered the following categories and were placed as follows:

Fantasy Makeup
1st place - Claudia Gilman
3rd place - Lisa West

Level 3 Red Carpet Makeup
1st place - Sorell Bown
2nd place - Katie Allport

First Year Blow Dry
3rd place - Zoe Travers

Level 2 Red Carpet Makeup
3rd place - Ellie Lloyd Jones

Avant Garde
1st  place  - Jayme Browning

Cut and Colour
3rd place - Jayme Browning

Blaenau Gwent Learning Zone Hairdressing Lecturer Helena Basset said: “I’m very proud of what the students have achieved by taking their skills outside the classroom and competing in a national competition.”

Crosskeys Lecturer Cerys Tugwell said: “We had a fantastic experience at the Salon Cymru awards with fab results. The students behaved excellently and had an overall brilliant experience.”
