Coleg Gwent students offer a chop and chat

A group of caring college students have been offering their skills and companionship to patients at the Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan hospital in Ebbw Vale.

Coleg Gwent’s NVQ Level 2 Hairdressers have been attending the hospital weekly to cut patients hair as part of the Sunflower volunteering Project at Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan.

The students, who study at the Blaenau Gwent Learning Zone, offer their salon skills and much needed companionship, and are happy to stay to chat, sing, and even dance with them after their haircut.

Students take their own hairdressing equipment and work in a salon room set up by the Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations (GAVO). This organisation is dedicated to strengthening the effectiveness of the voluntary and community sector across Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire and Newport.

Amanda Newman from GAVO said: “The hospital is a difficult environment for anyone let alone young people, I was so impressed with how well they adapted. We were so pleased at the enthusiasm to coming again and very grateful for the offer of regular attendance here. The service they provide for the patients is amazing and we will endeavour to support them in any way we can.”

Hairdressing Lecturer Barbara Lane said: “I am very proud of the enthusiasm and maturity that the students have displayed, and they should be proud of themselves for the difference their interaction can make to patience wellbeing.”

The student’s efforts were recognised with a presentation afternoon at the Blaenau Gwent Learning Zone where they received certificates from Miss Blaenau Gwent.

NVQ Level 2 student Ann-Marie Bolton said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience going to work at the hospital, the satisfaction of providing such a valuable service has been wonderful. For the patients to be so pleased to see us every week it’s lovely making a difference to their day.”

The Learning Zone is supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) funded by Welsh Government.
