What will I be doing?

AS Level

The WJEC module, The Legal System of England and Wales, covers two modules. The first looks at the way in which English law has developed and the sources of law, such as legislation, case law and European law. The second considers the mechanisms of the courts, the work and organisation of the legal profession, the involvement of lay persons and access to justice.

A Level (A2)

Those who pass AS Law can study A2 Level Law. The WJEC examined course looks at the protection of civil liberties and human rights in England and Wales. Police powers of stop and search, arrest, detention, questioning and surveillance are amongst the topics studied, as are privacy generally, freedom of expression, freedom of religion and freedom from discrimination.

Throughout the course, you can measure your progress through class work, homework and mock examinations. Assessment includes essays and problem questions or case studies. Upon completion of the course, you’ll achieve:

• English and Maths

What is expected of me?

To enter the course, you’ll need a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above, including English/Welsh First Language

Full commitment to attendance is required, as is respect for others, enthusiasm for the subject and self-motivation. You’ll be continually assessed and there is an expectation that you’ll continue your studies and coursework during your own time.

What comes next?

AS Law must be successfully completed before progressing to A2 Level.

If you’re planning on entering higher education, you’ll find a wide range of related courses, including degrees in law, business, management, accountancy and social services. Alternatively, law is a useful component of a general education course.
