What will I be doing?

The course is divided into 5 units: two AS and three A2. The AS qualification is gained at the end of the first year of study and the full A Level at the end of the two-year course.

Units 1 and 3 focus on the history of Wales and England (1485-1603 and 1890-1990). Units 2 and 4 involve the study of Weimar Germany (1918-1933) and Nazi Germany (1933-1945). Unit 5 is internally assessed coursework. This’ll be based on a topic related to Unit 3.

In AS and A2 History, there are facts and concepts to understand about how the society in which we live has evolved, but in studying the subject you’ll also develop skills such as research analysis, evaluation and communication.

For the AS Level qualification, you’ll be required to pass two units:

1. Two structured questions (Unit 1, 1485-1603)
2. Two source-based questions (Unit 2 Weimar Germany - one on primary sources, one on secondary)

For the A Level qualification, the AS plus another three units are required:

1. Two structured essays (Unit 3, 1890-1990)
2. One source-based question and one structured essay (Unit 4, Nazi Germany 1933-1945)
3. An internally assessed piece of coursework based on an aspect of Unit 3.

What is expected of me?

To enrol on this course, you’ll need a minimum of 5 GCSEs, Grade C or above, to include Grade B in English and History

Full commitment to attendance is required, as is respect for others, enthusiasm for the subject and self-motivation. You’ll be continually assessed and there’s an expectation that you’ll continue your studies and coursework during your own time.

What comes next?

History is a well-recognised traditional academic subject, which enables you to proceed to higher education or employment. Opportunities are available for history graduates in a range of professions including Law, Teaching, Business, Journalism and Museum work.
