In a nutshell
Ever been out walking and gone off track? If so, this short course is for you. On it, you’ll develop the skills for reading an Ordnance Survey map and by the end of the course should be able to use it to plan a route.

…walkers and cyclists at any level from beginner to experienced.
Course content
The course will provide you with a detailed understanding of the different features of an Ordnance Survey map including:
- Scale
- Key
- Signs and their meanings
- Contour lines and their purpose
You’ll learn how to use the grid referencing system to find a location, then work on your navigation skills to plan a route.
You’ll be expected to attend all sessions and take part in discussions and activities, and will need a basic level of literacy and numeracy to complete some tasks. Although there’s no formal qualification, your tutor will provide verbal feedback throughout each of your sessions.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements - you just need an interest in the subject.
Additional information
There’ll be a £5 material fee to cover any printing costs and if time allows this will also cover mini bus fuel costs to take the group out to undertake a basic route.
