This is a specialist vocational programme with a strong work-related emphasis. The course provides a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in the sector, nationally recognised by employers.

Course content

The course provides a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in the sector.

You will study units including:

Year 1

  • Mechanical science 1
  • Design and manufacture
  • Engineering mathematics

Year 2

  • Professional practice for engineers
  • Materials
  • Thermofluids

You will learn through a mixture of lectures, tutorials and practical sessions.


Learners will be assessed via coursework and examination.

Entry Requirements

You would usually need at least one of the following:

  • A relevant BTEC Level 3 profile of Merit/Merit
  • DD at A Level
  • DE grades at A Level plus C in Welsh Baccalaureate
  • Access to HE where you have achieved a Pass Diploma with 45 Passes

Plus: GCSE passes in three subjects at grade C or above to include maths and English Language (or equivalent). Mature students with relevant industry experience who do not meet the academic qualifications will be considered individually via interview.

Additional information

Upon completion, you can progress onto a Level 5 HND in Mechanical Engineering or the first/second year of a university degree programme.

Alternatively, you can go into technician engineering positions.

You will attend college eight hours per week, 30 weeks per year.
