In a nutshell

Study towards an industry recognised qualification in Construction.

This course is for you if...

... You have a keen interest in construction
... You want a nationally recognised qualification
... You work well with both practical and theoretical study

What will I be doing?

The qualification is provided by Pearson (Edexcel) and delivered by industry professionals at the Pontypool Campus.

Modules include Construction and Maintenance, Design Principles, Computer Aided Design, Materials and Science and Economics.

Current projects include design and management of a voluntary refurbishment to a local school building and design and specification of residential maintenance.

Sessions are a blend of lectures, design studios and practical experimentation, based around real project scenarios and simulated problems. Once complete, you’ll achieve the HNC Diploma Construction and the Built Environment.

What is expected of me?

To enter this course, you’ll need:

  • 2 A-Levels or equivalent, or
  • BTEC Level 3 at Merit Grade and above
  • Trade Diplomas and NVQs accepted with appropriate level of experience
  • Interview with a tutor to discuss personal situations and assess the level of experience already achieved in a similar field.

We expect full commitment to your studies and the ability to continue your studies in your own time.

What comes next?

The natural progression from the HNC is to complete the HND, which comprises a further 8 modules completed over a similar schedule of 1-2 years. There is an option to achieve two modules in the intermediate summer break between the HNC and HND to allow you further flexibility in your timetables.

Alternatively, links are made with local universities and discussions can be held to pursue honours degrees after successful completion of the HNC. The same offer can be made if you’re completing the HND.

Additional information

You’ll benefit from having access to a laptop, so that you become familiar with the Computer Aided Design process.

You’ll need to purchase a scale ruler, graphical pencils/pens and general stationery.

We offer the HNC over 2 years, with 8 modules to complete. Day release on Tuesday and a Thursday afternoon allows you to complete within one year, but personalised situations can be accommodated.
