Course content

The curriculum content places emphasis, through the modules and assessments, on developing your key transferable skills and knowledge that are relevant both to future employability and further academic studies.

You’ll consider the development of criminology (including criminal justice) as a distinct area of study and its multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary nature of inquiry.

You’ll learn to implement theories into operation by conducting research on crime, victimisation, crime control and criminal justice. You'll conduct informed debates about crime control policy, the scope of human rights, the links between criminal and social justice and the expanding knowledge base of crime.

A particular feature of the course is the 40-credit work placement opportunity at Level 5, which will provide direct experience of working in the sector.

Entry Requirements

Any one of the four options listed:

• 48 UCAS Tariff points

• BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma: Pass, Pass, Pass

• BTEC Level 3 Diploma: Merit, Pass

• A levels and Welsh Baccalaureate: DD – EEE in any combination;

Plus three GCSEs to include Maths and English or we'll consider Level 2 Key Skills.

An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check may be required if requested by your chosen work placement provider.

Additional information

Upon successful completion of the course, you will have the opportunity to progress to the BSc (Hons) Criminology & Criminal Justice at the University of South Wales (Trefforest Campus) and gain an undergraduate degree. Alternatively, you can secure other opportunities within Higher Education and employment in the criminal justice sector.

This is a two-year, full time course. You will be expected to attend college for sessions timetabled Monday - Friday.

During your second year, when on placement, you will be expected to attend full time for the days and hours dictated by your placement officer/personal tutor.

Due to the professional aspect of this course, students may be required to undergo an enhanced DBS check, if required, prior to undertaking their work placement. The cost of the check is £65.
